Gel Materials ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Phase transition gels use a network of long string polymers to hold water or other solvent inside. N-isopropylacrylamide gels in some cases expand and contract up to 1,000 fold at a specified trigger point. The stimulus can be a change in temperature, light, or ionization depending on the design of the molecule. The transition from initial volume to expanded state is reversible. By stimulating selected sets of small regions in the gel mass the gel can be directed to expand into a specific three dimensional shape. By incorporating an array of radio-controlled micro-stimulators linked to 3D modeling software the gel will morph to match a digital model or series of models.
